Mike Poirier
Mike began lifting weights via high school baseball, and into college where he pitched at Fitchburg state. Later, he transferred to Bridgewater and found his passion via studies in exercise science. He met Ellen Robinson who helped mold his persona as a fitness enthusiast, and urged him to join the college Olympic lifting team. He joined the Olympic lifting team, placing 2nd in his first ever meet. Mike loved the training concept of Olympic lifting, but had always stayed relatively fit, and was very in depth with how he provided his body with fuel.
Over the summer of 2007, he began shopping at Cape Cod Nutrition Corner. where he had the pleasure of meeting James Carron (owner and IFPA Pro) who was very encouraging when he brought up the possibility of giving amateur bodybuilding a go. Mike decided that summer to diet down for the OCB Maine Event, and the Cape Cod Natural. Little did he know his 8 weeks of dieting was far to little! After seeing the likes of Chuck Martin and Kirt Edwards battle... He vowed from then out to focus his attention on improving his physique, and taking his conditioning up a notch each season!
Mike came back one year later much improved, and placed 3rd at the Cape Cod Natural in open class 2. It was a victory for him, because he saw what progress could be had, and also because of the friendships that were beginning to arise via the OCB. Seeing where he needed to improve, he's spent the past 18 months bringing up his physique, and hopes to show improvement in April. He's starting his competition season at the OCB Spirit of America in Carver, MA.
During the 18 month layoff, he's also decided to put his hand in helping others reach there physique goals. He had the pleasure of helping Ted Oxholm, Brian Mcneaney and his girlfriend Lindsay Dopart, bring there best physiques to date, to the OCB Spirit of America in 2009. This past October Mike used the growing knowledge he has in this sport to help others reach new highs, Mauer Desai and Garrett Berna. Helping these individuals allowed Mike to assess different body types... and also monitor his own progress as a prep coach. It was so exciting to see each of them do so well... he can only hope to mimic their success!
Currently Mike's a visiting lecturer at Bridgewater State College, and Personal Trainer. He also will finish his masters in May and receive his Masters in the field of Strength and Conditioning. Mike Received his Bachelors in Exercise Science in 2008.
Mike looks forward to the 2010 season, as many familiar friends will be back on stage!
Mike's improvement since 2008 is evident. He carries excellent symmetry and is bringing his best conditioning to the stage this season. He shows great genetic potential, and should be a threat at every show he competes in this season. Are we looking at a future IFPA Pro? I wouldn't bet against him!
Mike's a great kid... he's just another shining example of the type of competitors we have in the OCB.
