Phil Maurice

Since Phil was a kid he was always athletic and played all sports. He started lifting weights mainly to build strength for football since he was about 15 years old, starting off slowly to work into it. By the time his high school football career ended at Londonderry, NH, he had broken many weight lifting records and had become a very involved weight trainer. Phil worked out in college at UNH on his off time while receiving his mechanical engineering degree and also a masters in business administration. He then landed a job as a nuclear systems operations engineer at Seabrook Station where he continued to work out religiously to keep his strength. Phil decided early in 2008 that he would take advantage of his hard work and gifted genetics and compete. He entered the NGA Granite State as a novice...and took the division...this gave him the confidence to pursue an open competition at the Yankee Classic. Since he started he had the goal of winning his pro card, he just didn't imagine it being so soon. Now Phil can move forward with his bodybuilding career quicker, and at 26 years old, has plenty of time to perfect his approach.

Phil's training is different from most bodybuilders. He changes up his workouts every two weeks.  Always hitting heavy weight, and always having long and gruesome workouts where people watching ask him how he  manages to get through it. And, of course accuse me of steroids... which is a daily event .

Phil usually works out alone but in some cases has his bodybuilding lifelong friend, Greg Notaro come on special days to spot him when he wants to take his training to the limit .  His workouts are usually 2 hours of heavy weights and 30 min. of cardio...this is how it is up until 1 week out of competition, then he will combine body parts and do each body part 3 times a week, and with twice the cardio.  After his shows he does recovery workouts for a month which consists of only light weight bench, squats, dead lifts, barbell press, and barbell curls for 3 days a week.. After that its back to normal.

As for his diet...Phil has never counted calories and never counted grams. That has never been an issue for him. He has never taken advice on training or nutrition. He's learned about is body over the years so well that he can tell what its trying to tell him. Phil takes time understanding the difference between a need and a crave and he believes he has fully protected it. He's able to go from about 13% body fat to just under 4% in about 14 weeks without losing much muscle at all and without counting even 1 gram or calorie. Understanding what the body is asking for takes years to understand, but comes in very handy when training for a show.

The support that he gets from my family is incredible especially his parents, Donna, jerry and his girlfriend Anne. Phil's parents show up to all his shows and give him the mental support to keep strong while his girlfriend coaches him through it and helps prepare his meals and plan workouts, not to mention helping him with tanning and shaving... god bless her.

Phil's other hobby is music. He's also played guitar since he was seven and has played and sang in several bands since then. He continues to tinker in music in between workouts and usually use the guitar to cool down after a long workout. Phil gets his heart rate back down and gives his body something to concentrate on other than lifting.

Phil plans on taking a break to work on size and will do a show next year where he will bring it all.

After judging Phil at the Natural Yankee Classic this year, it's hard not to be impressed with his physique. He's one big guy and can dominate a stage.

I look forward to seeing more of Phil in the future!
